Palmer
Nominees Wanted
Ward Swanson
The MCF Palmer Award
Committee is now taking nominations to be considered for this year’s
Palmer Award. The Palmer Award was created to recognize and to encourage
the art and science of chromatography, in particular as it is related to
the membership of MCF. It is given to those individuals whose professional
as well as scientific accomplishments have fostered progress in
chromatography. The award consists of a plaque, suitably inscribed, which
is presented at the MCF Spring Symposium.
If you know someone who is deserving of such an award fill out the nomination
form and email it to wswanson@barr.com
or mail it to the address on the form. Nominations must be received
by
May 1, 2003.

Do You
Have Any Vintage HPLC Equipment???
The Keynote Speaker for
the 2003 Spring Symposium, John Dolan, will address the topic of “HPLC
Technology: Past, Present, and Future.” As he reflects on the
history of HPLC, he will share some photos of vintage HPLC equipment.
If you have access to any vintage HPLC equipment, John would appreciate a
digital photo for possible inclusion in his presentation. You may
send digital photos to him at john.dolan@bioanalytical.com
Thanks for your help.
MCF Spring
Meeting
Petrochemical
Applications of Ion Chromatography
Speaker:
Robert Freeman, Ph.D
Date
April 22, 2003
Sheraton
Four Points at I-94 and Hamline
Refreshments:
6:30 PM and Presentation at 7:00 PM
Utilization of ion
chromatography has steadily grown over the years. Presently, there
are many respectable applications throughout the chemical industry.
This talk will include some history of ion chromatography, basic
principles of operation, function of common detectors, and description of
several petrochemical applications.
Dr. Freeman is presently the Laboratory Manager at the Pine Bend Refinery
for Flint Hills Resources, a Koch Industries subsidiary. The Pine
Bend Refinery is one of the largest refining complexes in the country,
supplying motor fuels to the Twin Cities area, jet fuel to the MSP
airport, and environmentally formulated fuels to the overall
Great Lakes
area, including BLUE PLANET gasoline.

Ravi Ravichandran
The beautiful weather
we had for the past few days along with the American Cancer Society
sponsored daffodil sale reminded me that Spring is already here! Of
course, the best part of the spring season is the opportunity for all of
us to get together again at the MCF Spring Symposium. Please take some
time to peruse the symposium information found through out this
newsletter.
One of the annual
activities at the Symposium is the election of some of our Board members.
The MCF Board is the group of people who chart the course of MCF- a well
recognized professional organization working towards the advancement
separation science in the upper
Midwest
. If you would like to get involved, now is your chance! Or,
if you know of someone to recommend, nominate them! We will be
electing a 1st year Director, President-elect and Secretary-elect.
If you would like to find out what people in these positions actually do,
feel free to contact us. You can find out who and how at www.minnchrom.org/board_members.htm.
(Or, if you would like to get involved with one of the committees, contact
the chairperson.) All of the contact names and numbers can be found on the
MCF website. Please give thoughtful consideration to whether you
might volunteer or know of someone to nominate. This is your chance to
have an impact on how MCF is run and what we do. You can volunteer or
forward nominations to our current President-elect, Brenda Tjelta, at brenda.tjelta@ecolab.com
or at (651)306-4236.
I want to take this
opportunity to solicit a volunteer to take over the newsletter editor
position. I have been doing it for the past 3 years. MCF Retention Times
is the primary mode of communication for the members. I am sure there are
quite a few of you out there who may be interested in editing the
newsletter. The process of bringing a newsletter has been streamlined
well. The only task of the editor is to compose the newsletter content
and send it to the printer via email. The rest of it is very transparent.
Please call at 651-575-1407 or send an email to rravichandran@mmm.com
if you are interested.
See you all at the
Spring Symposium!
Big
Anniversary!
Peter R. Johnson
Did you know that
March 21, 1903
is a special date in the history of chromatography. On that day, at a
Meeting of the Warsaw Society of Natural Scientists, Mikhail Semenovich
Tswett presented a lecture entitled "On a New Category of Adsorption
Phenomena and its Application in Biochemical Analysis". Thus,
chromatography was introduced by a 30-year-old Russian specialist in
botany, biochemistry, and physiology, and it went on to become the premier
separation technique of the 20th century.
He was a good scientist but a bit eccentric:
According to the Tswett scholar V. G. Berezkin's account, when Tswett
proposed to his future wife, she and her mother finally found out that the
35 year-old botanist had no bed and had been sleeping on a table in the
botanical laboratory. It may be too late to do this year. Perhaps on
March 21, 2004
, have a glass of vodka and toast Mikhail!

the Symposium
The
Minnesota Chromatography Forum invites you to participate in its 24th
Annual Spring Symposium and Short Courses at the Earl Brown Heritage
Center in Minneapolis, MN. This year's program will interest people
from all areas of separation science.
This
Call for Papers solicits contributions for oral and poster presentations
from all areas of separation science. This is an excellent
opportunity to share your work with your peers. General interest
topics are very popular sessions.
The
work must be presented by a person who was directly involved in the
research. Plan your presentation to be no longer than fifteen
minutes followed by a five minute question and answer period
