2003 MCF Undergraduate Research Award (UGA) $4,000 Grant – Deadline March 1st, 2003 The MCF Undergraduate Research Award is awarded annually (this year in March!) and presented at the Spring Symposium of the Minnesota Chromatography Forum. It is designed to entice undergraduate students to become involved in scientific research. Proposals must be submitted by undergraduate students for short research projects (e.g. a 6-week project) in which an innovative use of chromatography or some other separation technique plays an important role. A panel of judges reviews the proposals and selects the best proposal by March 15, 2003. The student winner is awarded the sum of $4,000. The winner then presents their research results at the 2004 MCF Spring Symposium. Any undergraduate student who has the support of an advisor in the designing and the implementation of the project is encouraged to apply. The proposed work may be done as part of a course such as an Introduction to Research course or it may be done as a separate project. The major requirements for the proposal are that it be written by the student and the work done under the guidance of a faculty member, who agrees to act as sponsor. Faculty guidance in suggesting a research problem and formulating the proposal is, of course, allowed. Neither the student, nor the faculty sponsor, need be members of the Minnesota Chromatography Forum in order to qualify. The award money will be presented to the student to use as a stipend and for the purchase of equipment. The Minnesota Chromatography Forum urges you to make this grant known to students and faculty members, encouraging them to submit proposals. The proposals need not be long (a few pages) and the research itself should be simple enough to be completed in from three to eight weeks of full time laboratory research. Please forward this information to other advisors who have candidates for this award. All proposals should be sent to the following address: MCF Undergraduate Research
Grant Inquiries about this research grant should be directed to Dr. DeWayne Townsend, (952) 929-1996 or e-mail at dd-town@maroon.tc.umn.edu Call for Papers! MCF is now accepting abstracts for 24th Annual MCF Spring Symposium to be held on Thursday, May 15, 2003. Submit abstracts on-line via the MCF web page (www.minnchrom.org) (select Symposium Info then Submit Abstract) Exhibitor booths are filling fast. Watch for the MCF Symposium entry in LC/GC Magazine (chromatographyonline.com) and American Laboratory (icspubs.com). Courses Offered at the 24th Annual Symposium Chromatographic Analysis of Foods and Flavors - Becky Wittrig (Restek) Mass Spectral Interpretation - Phil Lyon and Stacy Hanson (3M) Practical Advice for Developing Better GC Methods - Cameron George and Darren Decker (Agilent) Troubleshooting HPLC Systems - John Dolan (LC Resources) Registration Deadline for all courses is April 30, 2003. Visit the MCF website for registration details or watch for special mailings with course details! Education Corner Michelle Iverson, Education Committee Chairperson Due to an abundance of local support, 3 of our most recent courses have filled over capacity, weeks before the deadline. Unfortunately, we have had to turn away many prospective students. In order to keep the labs "hands-on" and the lectures personal we must set a limit on the number of students allowed in a class. Local vendor support is the only reason the MCF is able to offer a course with a "hands-on" lab at an economical price. I was told by John Dolan of LC Resources (John will be back by popular demand for the next two years to instruct HPLC Troubleshooting) that this is the only place where he instructs that a lab is offered with his course, and he commented on the strong commitment and dedication that the local vendors have to the MCF. Because the vendors are donating their expertise and their instrumentation we can only ask them to do 2-3 courses each year. We offer two courses annually that contain a lab, Beginning HPLC and Introductory GC. Watch the newsletters or the website for Beginning HPLC, October 2003, and Introductory GC, January 2004. Go to http://www.minnchrom.org/calendar_courses.htm for course registration forms. The education committee is excited to offer 4 short courses at the upcoming Spring Symposium. Becky Wittrig of Restek will instruct an industry specific course, "Chromatography Analysis of Foods and Flavors." Phil Lyon is back along with Cliff Jacoby and Stacy Hanson of 3M to instruct the popular "Mass Spectral Interpretation" course. Daron Decker and Cameron George of Agilent will be instructing "Practical Advice for Developing Better GC Methods," the GC course will include a half-day of lab. And last, but not least, John Dolan of LC Resources will instruct his "Troubleshooting HPLC Systems," this year the course will not be offered with a lab. At the Board of Director’s spring meeting, the board voted to increase the Undergraduate Award to $4,000! We feel this is a competitive amount, and should generate interest at our local universities. We are looking forward to reviewing the research proposals. Thanks again for your continuous support and we look forward to 2004! If you would like to suggest a possible course, instructor, or would like to join our committee, please contact me at 952.431.6000 or via e-mail: michelle@chromtech.com From the Editor's Desk Ravi Ravichandran I am still looking for a guest column. Pittcon 2003 is around the corner. If you happen to attend Pittcon 2003, please drop me a review with your thoughts on the conference. This is a great medium to publish some review articles or introduce to the members of MCF that great separation technique you have been working on. If you happen to come across good articles (reviews included) on HPLC, GC, CE or for that matter any unique sample preparation technique, please drop me a line and I will definitely find room for it in the newsletter. I encourage all our readers to consider writing guest columns- they could be meeting reviews or course reviews. Keep up the good work and stay in touch. Call For Palmer Award Nominations Ward Swanson, Past President MCF The Minnesota Chromatography Forum (MCF) is seeking nominations for the Palmer Award to be presented at the 2003 Spring Symposium. The Palmer Award has been given out by the MCF for the past 22 years. The award recognizes individuals for their contributions to the art and science of chromatography. The award can also be given to an individual for his or her service to the MCF or the chromatography community. Past recipients have included internationally recognized chromatographers as well as long-term MCF volunteers. For a listing of the past recipients of the Palmer Award please visit the MCF web site at www.minnchrom.org. A committee chaired by the MCF Past President reads and discusses all individuals nominated for the award, and then selects a winner. The Past President of the MCF heads the committee. The nomination form can be found on the MCF web site at www.minnchrom.org. ATTENTION MCF MEMBERS! In December, 2001, MCF established a new post office box. Mail sent to the previous one should have been forwarded, but was not until May 2002. MCF was informed that some mail was destroyed. We don't know if that actually occurred. If you have sent correspondence to MCF that has not been acknowledged, please contact:Jan Jopke 952-949-2518 ccs@mn.rr.com New MCF Address: P.O. BOX 44562 |
