John moved from Indiana to Minnesota during the summer of 2000 when he was hired to start and run an analytical core facility at the Center for Addiction and Alternative Medicine Research, Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation. Over the past two years his primary responsibilities have been to provide analytical support for ongoing pre-clinical investigations of alternative treatments used to treat alcoholism and nicotine addiction. In addition to this work, John has also been able to pursue smaller fun projects such as investigating quality control in herbal products and assisting other researchers with analytical development. John received his B.S. in 1994 from Taylor University in Upland, IN and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry in 2000 from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. John and his wife live in Stillwater, MN where they take care of their new baby girl and their 2-year-old Labrador. In his free time, John loves to spend time hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Upcoming Courses: January 7-9, 2003 See page 2 for details of the course and registration information. From the Editor's Desk Ravi Ravichandran Some of you may be surprised that this newsletter does not look any different from the last issue. I waited until October 25, 2002 to start composing this issue. Since I did not receive anything else besides the communication from the Education Committee Chair, I decided to take the news letter to the press with whatever I had. It has been at least a year a since we had any guest columns or meeting or conference reviews. I hope we can do better this year. This is a great medium to publish some review articles or introduce to the members of MCF that great separation technique you have been working on. If you happen to come across good articles (reviews included) on HPLC, GC, CE or for that matter any unique sample preparation technique, please drop me a line and I will definitely find room for it in the newsletter. I hope some of you attended the HPLC 2002. If you did, please consider writing a short column reflecting what appealed to you at the meeting. I encourage all our readers to consider writing guest columns - they could be meeting reviews or course reviews. There will be no newsletter coming out in December 2002. There will be a combined December 2002-January 2003 issue. Keep up the good work and stay in touch. Attn: All Chromatographers!!! "Beginning Gas Chromatography" January 7-9, 2003 .... Presenting MCF’s three day workshop in beginning gas chromatography! Taught by two of our most popular instructors, this workshop is offered to provide introductory training in the applications of GC to practical industry and laboratory analytical problems. Mail sent to the previous one should have been forwarded, but was not until May 2002. MCF was informed that some mail was destroyed. We don't know if that actually occurred.
