If you are wondering why this issue of newsletter looks very much like the September issue, there is a good reason. I usually send out a note soliciting contributions for the newsletter about a week before the actual deadline. I was and still am very numb from what happened on Sep 11, 2001. I am sure everyone has been deeply affected by this unthinkable event in some way or other. I just did not bother to send a note. I hope all the members will understand this. I was reading the Sep 24, 2001 issue of Chemical & Engineering News. The President of American Chemical Society has written a very thought provoking message. I encourage you to read it. I would have printed it in this issue, but I need to get permission from ACS to do so. If you do not have access to the journal, please contact me and give me your email address. I will send you the email copy of it.

I have heard that several national meetings and conventions are being canceled or rescheduled. Businesses are asking their employees to refrain from travels unless it is absolutely essential. Many including yours truly have experienced the disappointment stemming from such a business decision. It is only temporary. Let us all hang in there and things will get better. Let us all look forward to a peaceful and bright 2002 which is only 90 or so days away!
