24 April 2000 MCF Board Meeting Minutes

From the President's Desk:

Ravi Ravichandran

I hope you are all enjoying the gorgeous weather we have been having. I will officially become the "Past President" the afternoon of May 18 2000. It feels like yesterday since I became the President in 1999. It has been a great year filled with a lot of things to brag about. A few obvious things that come to my mind are:

  1. MCF has obtained our own copy of Quicken 2000 and with the help of David Eikens, our Treasurer Bin Cai has streamlined the accounting. It is a snap to generate reports now. Thank you Dave for your willingness to help.
  2. MCF Board has signed an agreement to host the Spring Symposium at the Earle Brown Heritage Center through the year 2003. The Board has the option of renewing the contract annually. This negotiation saves MCF approximately $5000-$6000. Thanks to our meeting support person Jan Jopke who worked diligently with the Earl Brown Center.
  3. The MCF Website is up and running very satisfactorily. Since fall of 1999 David Eikens has become the Webmaster. He is truly a master! He has been very efficient in getting the website updated. Dave has been doing a lot of improvements to the self-supporting website. Authors can submit abstracts through the website. MCF members can register for quarterly meetings through the website. MCF website has been listed as one of the good sites to for Separation Scientists! Thank you Dave for all the time and effort you have put in!
  4. Ward Swanson has done an excellent job of organizing the Symposium. I am positive this year will be smashing success!
  5. Kim Grandprey has again made it an excellent year for MCF through organization of several unique courses. Thanks to Kim and her committee members.

I am sure I am missing some of the other obvious things.

Have a good spring season. See you at the Spring Symposium.

Call For Palmer Award Nominations

The Minnesota Chromatography Forum (MCF) presents the Palmer Award annually at the Spring Symposium. The award recognizes one individual for their contributions to the art and science of chromatography during the previous year. Past recipients have included internationally recognized chromatographers as well as long-term MCF volunteers. Many people wonder about the Palmer Award and who is eligible to receive it. This may answer some of those questions.

What is the Palmer Award?
The Palmer Award has been given out by the MCF for the past 18 years. The award recognizes individuals for their contributions to the art and science of chromatography. The award can also be given to someone for service to the MCF or the chromatography community.

How is the Palmer Award winner selected?
A committee that reads and discusses all individuals nominated for the award selects a winner. The Past President of the MCF heads the committee.

Who can receive the award?
Any individual who works or deals with chromatography can receive the Palmer Award. The individual does not need to be regionally or nationally known for their contributions. This award is for anyone who contributes to our community.

How can I nominate someone?
Fill out the nomination below or you can find the nomination form on the MCF web site at www.minnchrom.org.

24 April 2000 Board Meeting Minutes
(Pending Board Approval)

Pat Sackett

Present: G Bailie, D Eikens, J Jopke, R Ravichandran, T Robison, P Sackett, W Swanson, B Wittrig

Treasurer's Report: The US Bank account has been closed, and we should not have monthly bank from here on out. The balance is growing, mainly because of registration and booth fee deposits.

Symposium Committee Report: Registrations are up about 20% over the same time point last year. We added 15 booths over last year’s total and we’re 4 away from a total sell-out. Things are on track and the Committee is in mop-up mode.

Education Committee Report: Everything’s running smoothly, the Committee has one more meeting and the drop dead date for registrations is the 10th. As of the 24th we had 6 signed up for Size Exclusion, 16 for GC, and 19 for MS, with GC and MS expected to fill.

Website: Since August we’ve averaged 7.4 hits per day. Lately we’ve been averaging 7.8 hits per day, including visits from the UK, Canada, Germany, and Australia.

Next Meeting: Annual Business Meeting at the end of the Symposium.  Time and location TBA.
