Summer GC Course Summary

William Cameron

July 13th - 15th, twenty-three men and women met to expand their knowledge of gas chromatography. Throughout the 3-day course entitled, "Beginning Gas Chromatography", the two instructors, Dr. Gary Reineccius and John Freeburg, shared their expertise and experiences. The class format provided lectures each morning and laboratory sessions each afternoon. During the morning sessions the 'black box' (known as a GC) was broken wide open. Parts, optimization, and troubleshooting techniques were discussed. The lab sessions provided a chance for the class to see a wide variety of instrumentation and to put into practice the ideas discussed during the morning session. The instructors were joined by Hadi Jamedor and Valerie Mikles of Shimadzu; Kevin Tyvoll of Perkin-Elmer; Gerald Koncar of ThermoQuest and Michelle Pierson of ChromTech; and Gerhard Zehentbumer of FScN during the laboratory sessions.

From the President’s Desk

Ravi Ravichandran

It is hard to believe that another year has gone by. I hope all of you have been enjoying the gorgeous last summer of the millennium.

I still reminisce the 20th Spring Symposium which was a grand success, thanks to the hard work of all the people under the able leadership of "El Presidente" Luke Charpentier. In the upcoming months the MCF Board will start meeting to discuss the upcoming year’s activities.

Have you ever wondered who the MCF board members are and what activities they do? The MCF board meets approximately every 6 weeks. Board meetings are open to all MCF members. Only the elected board members are eligible to vote on issues. Meetings are a great time to meet others and talk (and occasionally eat)!

According to our Secretary-elect/Secretary Pat Sackett, the specifics of the Board meetings such as dates and times were published in MCF newsletters years ago. Gone are the days in which our lives were predictable. In today’s world, we are all busy with both our professional and personal lives which makes timely communication to the newsletter a Herculean task. The board will make every attempt to announce the meeting through the newsletter whenever possible. In my opinion the best medium of communication is the MCF Website. Please visit the website to find a wealth of information about all of MCF’s meetings. I will personally make sure that the board meeting information is published on the website. Please visit www.minnchrom.org frequently to keep informed.

The Education Committee has lined up great courses for the rest of 1999 and into Spring of year 2000.

MCF has a new Symposium Committee Chairperson-Ward Swanson. Ward can be reached at 612-862-2660 or via email at wswanson@barr.com. If you would like to take part in the Symposium organizing task, please get in touch with Ward. He will be glad to accept your help. You will be glad you called him!

The other important thing I would like to do this year is to increase MCF’s membership base. If you have any comments or ideas for how we can increase our membership, please feel free to send an email to rravichandran@mmm.com.

IMPORTANT SURVEY... WE NEED YOUR RESPONSE!!!
RE: Beginning Gas Chromatography

Traditionally the Beginning GC course has been offered every June or July. In response to survey comments (cooler lab times!) and a change in the University's schedule, the annual course will now be offered the second week of January.

Hence the current dilemma…the MCF urgently needs your input!!!

Shall the course be offered this coming January 2000? Or shall it be delayed until January 2001? If offered in 2001, the course interval between this very popular course offering will be 18 months.

All lab managers are asked to consider their current and future needs, along with those desiring to expand their chromatographic education! Please e-mail/phone/FAX your response and/or comments ASAP to the education chair. Or use the on-line survey form.

NOTE: The decision whether to offer this course in 2000 must be made by October 15th, 1999! Looking forward to your responses!!!

August 25,1999 Board Meeting Minutes

Pat Sackett

Present: G Bailie, L Charpentier, D Eikens, K Grandprey, R Ravichandran, P Sackett, R Taylor, B Wittrig

Treasurer’s Report: The balance is up slightly, around $17k. Bin and David E. developed a new categorization of expenses and income to improve our ability to track flows.

Education: Four courses are confirmed for the next year: Advanced LC, Advanced GC, Beginning LC and the FT/IR course originally scheduled for the May 1999 Symposium. The committee is debating whether or not to offer beginning GC again in January 2000, registrants were turned away for the July course and the wisdom of offering a GC course in the heat of summer has been questioned. Overheads for the course will be transferred to Power Point, which should facilitate production of manuals. Mass spectral interpretation and GC troubleshooting will be offered during the Symposium in 2000, a topic for a third course is still undecided.

Symposium: Volunteers are coming forward to staff the committee, although more are being sought for recruitment of speakers outside the environmental area. Past chairs of the committee will forward their activity timelines to the current chair, Ward Swanson.

Membership: The current roster consists of 664 individuals, of which 214 are 1 year in arrears and 125 will be dropped unless renewals are received.

Website: 2500 visits were recorded between February and July from France, the UK, Norway, Italy and Germany and the US. David E. has taken over site maintenance and has redesigned several sections, most notably the Organization pages. Links are available to the sites of supporting vendors and other chromatography discussion groups. Keystone Scientific praised the quality of the site, and asked if they could add our link to their website.

Old Business: Only 3 submissions were received for the Undergraduate Award this year, and the award is being rethought. Are we not targeting the proper individuals in academe, should we change the single grant to multiple quarterly scholarships, should the undergraduate presentation at the Symposium continue? The Education committee is debating options.

Next Meeting: 20 October, 7:30. Call Pat Sackett at 651/737-0467 for directions if you’d like to attend.
