Spring Quarterly Meeting Review

Electrochemically Modulated Liquid Chromatography

The Spring Quarterly Meeting was held on April 2nd at the Earle Brown Heritage Center. Dr. Marc Porter, who is a professor in the Chemistry Department at Iowa State University and Director of the University’s Microanalytical Instrumentation Center, discussed his work with electrochemically modulated liquid chromatography (EMLC).

Using EMLC, Dr. Porter is attempting to modulate the composition of the stationary phase electrochemically. By changing the applied potential, he is able to change retention. His talk illustrated the possibilities of a compositionally tunable stationary phase and perhaps leading to a "universal" column design.

By adjusting the applied potential, Dr. Porter showed that the retention characteristics of anions and cations, neutral aromatic compounds, steroids, and pharmaceutical compounds can be adjusted. In his first example, the retention of aromatic sulfonates increased with positive applied potential and decreased with negative applied potential compared with open circuit conditions. Dr. Porter also illustrated the effect of electrochemical gradients and potential step experiments. For neutral aromatic compounds with strong dipole moments the applied potential adjusts the p -donor/acceptor strengths. Using a polypyrrole coated stationary phase he measured the retention of monosubstituted benzene compounds as a function of applied potential and found a linear relationship between retention and applied potential but this linear relationship does not hold for steroids. In studies with steroids, where steroids differing by only a double bond can be separated, it is believed that the supporting electrolyte plays a role in retention by competition. Studies are continuing to explore the role of the supporting electrolyte with the applied potential. By addition of chiral additives such as b -cyclodextrin the column can be tuned for chiral separations. Separations of the chiral isomers of hexobarbital and mephenytoin were successfully accomplished.

April 1998 MCF Board Meeting Minutes

Present: L. Charpentier, A. Dallas, J. Jopke, L. Pekay, T. Robison, P. Sackett, D. Whitman

Treasurer's Report: Expenses are running as expected prior to the Symposium. The state tax bureau turned down our request for non-taxable status, and indicated our incorporation documents weren't appropriate to a non-profit organization. Luke Charpentier will investigate the possibility of reincorporation, and whether the savings will be worthwhile in the long run.

Education Committee Report: We netted about $3000 from the last course. A GC course is scheduled for August, instructor to date unknown. Symposium courses are on track and a 2-part methods course may be offered this fall. Applications are needed for the undergraduate award; e-mail DeWayne Townsend (d-town@maroon.tc.umn.edu) for more information.

Program Reports: Attendance at the March meeting was around 30, and Steve Anderson has a speaker lined up for the fall quarterly meeting.

Symposium Committee Report: The Convention Center has sold 80% of the space we previously had reserved, so our losses on breaking that contract may be minimal. Abstracts are pouring in, although posters are more limited, and booths are slowly being sold.

Palmer Award: As usual, nominations are desperately needed! Lars will try a personal plea to people at various area companies and organizations.

Membership: Although adding e-mail addresses to current member information might be useful, our current database will not support the addition. Movement to another platform such as Access would make that feasible. Tom got a very limited response to his request to vendors to hand out MCF-related information.

Old Business: The web site will be redesigned by a professional provider, 1st Scribe, who will also acquire a permanent domain name for the organization. We hope to have the site up and running prior to the Symposium.
