"Topics in Advanced
Gas Chromatography"

February 2nd & 3rd, 1999

Announcing the MCF’s workshop in Topics for Advanced Gas Chromatography! The purpose of this workshop is to provide training and insight in advanced applications and techniques for GC, along with their application to practical industry and laboratory problems. The course will include classroom instruction along with a question and answer session for problems encountered by the students in the class. All class participants are encouraged to bring issues and concerns to the course for discussion.

This session’s two instructors are well known to the MCF, both having taught previous GC courses for our membership body, including Advanced GC and GC Troubleshooting!

Program: Sessions will begin at 8:00 AM and end at approximately 5:00 PM. Lunch will be provided each day along with morning and afternoon breaks. Parking is available nearby (pay lot).

Instructors: Daron Decker and Dr. Philip Stremple of J&W Scientific

Date/Time: February 2nd & 3rd, 1999; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Location: University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus Earle Brown Continuing Education Center 1890 Buford Avenue, Room 156

Topics to be covered include:

  • Quick theory review
  • Fast GC with 100 µm columns
  • Advanced injection techniques,
  • including large volume injection
  • PLOT columns for light hydrocarbon separations
  • Derivatization Technics for Better Gas Chromatography
  • High temperature GC
  • Recent advances in stationary phases
  • Chiral separations by GC
  • Ten tips to keep your GC in top form

Meet the Instructors...

Daron Decker is currently employed with J&W Scientific, Inc as the Southern Region Technical Specialist. He has been with J&W for nine years working in the area of technical support for the company. J&W specializes in high resolution gas chromatography (GC) and is the leading manufacturer of capillary GC columns and. In his duties as technical support, Daron has given hundreds of seminars, courses and technical papers on GC both domestic and international. Before coming to J&W, Daron worked for two and half years as a analytical chemist for an environmental lab in south central Minnesota. He received his BS in Chemistry (ACS Degree) from the University of South Dakota in 1987. Daron has been a long time proponent of the MCF and member since 1987. He has given two other courses GC (Advanced GC, co-taught with Walt Jennings) for the MCF and presented many technical papers at the spring meetings over the years.

Dr. Phil Stremple has taught numerous GC courses as Manager of Applied Science for J&W Scientific. In that role he is responsible for technical support and customer training at J&W. He is a co-author, with Walter Jennings and Eric Mittlefehldt of "Analytical Gas Chromato-graphy". His extensive industrial experience in a variety of application areas have gained him the well deserved reputation of an expert in the theory and practice of GC with special emphasis on the Industrial chemical and consumer product areas.

This is Phil’s second course for MCF; in 1997 he taught "Getting the Best Results from Your Gas Chromatograph" with John Hinshaw. Phil received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Iowa in 1983 and was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT from 1983 to 1985. Prior to joining J&W Scientific he then spent 9 years as an analytical chemist for the Clorox Company specializing in the gas chromatography of industrial, environmental and consumer product samples.
