USE OF DESIGNED EXPERIMENTS (DOE) IN CHROMATOGRAPHIC APPLICATIONS

Introductory: November 4th - 6th, 1998
Advanced: December 2nd, 1998

It’s time again for the MCF to offer its newest course! This new course offering is an introductory level course in Design of Experiments (DOE), aimed at anyone involved with method development or method validation in GC or HPLC. A single day session of advanced applications will follow on Wednesday, December 2, 1998.

Instructor:
Lars Pekay

Location:
University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus
Earle Brown Continuing Education Center
1890 Buford Avenue

INTRODUCTORY SESSION

Date/Time:
November 4th-6th, 1998;
8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Day One

  • Introduction and overview of Designed Experiments (DOE)
  • Comparison of DOE with traditional one variable at a time (OVAT) experiments

Day Two

  • Practical demonstrations, student exercises, and case study discussions of DOE as applied to chromatography (method development and troubleshooting)
  • Understanding of the basic statistics behind DOE

Day Three

  • Discussion of available software used for designed experiments
  • Discussion of when to use DOE vs. other experimental designs in chromatographic applications

ADVANCED SESSION

Date/Time: December 2nd, 1998;
8:00 am - 5:00 pm

  • DOE on selected Real-World Problems from Students
  • Advanced Techniques for Special Problems

Meet the Instructor...

Lars A. Pekay, Ph.D., is a senior research scientist at General Mills. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Wake Forest University in North Carolina and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Ohio State University. His graduate work focused on the development and characterization of sulfur specific detectors for supercritical fluid chromatography to monitor the effectiveness of a proprietary method of coal desulfurization During his tenure at General Mills, Lars has worked on both HPLC and GC method development, extensive training on both analytical methods and applied statistics, vitamin processing research, and on the development of a certification program to decrease analytical variability. He is also an American Society of Quality Control Certified Auditor and has served on the Minnesota Chromatography Forum board and symposium committees and MCF president.
