Mass Spectral Interpretation

May 16-17, 2000

Back after a three year hiatus, our regularly offered mass spec course presents the basics in spectral interpretation and is designed for both those just embarking on mass spectral interpretation and for those who wish to refresh their techniques and understanding in interpretation.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Review of instrumentation and basic principles
  • Characteristics of a good mass spectrum
  • Relating Chemical Structure to the mass spectrum
  • Fragmentation pathways
  • Soft Ionization Techniques (e.g. CI, APCI, ESI)
  • Hyphenated techniques

Meet the Instructors ...

Dr. Robin Pachuta is a Program Manager at 3M Pharmaceuticals. She received her B.S. in chemistry from Ashland University, Ohio and Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Purdue University. Her graduate work focused on the direct analysis of natural products and ion/molecule reactions using tandem mass spectrometry. She worked as a research chemist at General Mills, Inc. prior to joining 3M. At 3M she has held a number of positions in the Analytical Research and Development department, including Research Specialist and Technical Manager.

Dr. Phil Lyon is a Technical Manager with the Analytical R&D group at 3M Pharmaceuticals. He did his undergraduate work in chemistry at the University of Nebraska and received a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. For five years he served as Assistant Director of the Midwest Center for MS at the University of Nebraska, then as a lab manager for an environmental testing firm prior to joining 3M. Phil spent eight years in the 3M Corporate Research Lab heading the MS efforts, then moved to the Pharmaceuticals Division to become Analytical Manger. In his current position he is responsible for all spectroscopy efforts and the division’s outsourcing activities. The focus of his research and publications are on applications of mass spectrometry for analytical problem solving. Dr. Lyon participated in the organization of the Minnesota Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group.
