"2001 MCF Undergraduate Research Award"

$3500 Grant – Deadline March 1st, 2001

We are pleased to announce an enhanced offering for the 2001 Minnesota Chromatography Forum’s (MCF’s) Undergraduate Research Grant. This year the award has been increased from $2500 to $3500, with an earlier deadline and award date to accommodate students seeking summer research grants.

What it is???

The MCF Undergraduate Research Award is awarded annually (this year in March!) and presented at the Spring Symposium of the Minnesota Chromatography Forum. It is designed to entice undergraduate students to become involved in scientific research. Proposals are submitted by undergraduate students for short research projects (e.g. a 6-week project) in which chromatography or some other separation technique plays an important role. A panel of judges reviews the proposals and the student submitting the best proposal is awarded the sum of $3500. The winner then presents their research results at the following MCF Spring Symposium.

Who is eligible??

Any undergraduate student who has the support of an advisor in the designing and the implementation of the project.

What topics are eligible??

The proposed work may be done as part of a course such as an Introduction to Research course or it may be done as a separate project. The major requirements for the proposal are that it be written by the student and the work done under the guidance of a faculty member, who agrees to act as sponsor. Faculty guidance in suggesting a research problem and formulating the proposal is, of course, allowed. Neither the student, nor the faculty sponsor, need be members of the Minnesota Chromatography Forum in order to qualify. The award money will be presented to the student to use as a stipend and for the purchase of equipment.

Although there is no limit on the number of proposals that we will accept, we do not anticipate receiving more than about 20, so the chances of winning are quite good. If you have any questions, please contact DeWayne Townsend at (612) 625-4488 (University of Minnesota), (612) 724-7010  (home) or by e-mail at d-town@maroon.tc.umn.edu.
